What Hunter Elliott and Mike Bianco said after Ole Miss’ Saturday loss to Kentucky
No. 10 Ole Miss fell to Kentucky 9-2 on Saturday to tie his weekend streak with the Wildcats.
Hunter Elliott started on the hill for the Rebels, his first in SEC action. The rebellious freshman struggled with command at times, but he left the game in a 2-2 draw before Kentucky could open the game late.
Ole Miss’s only two points came in the opening round. From then on, the rebel bats were mostly silent.
The Rebels also announced after the game that Jack Washburn would start on the hill for the Rebels on Sunday. Here’s what Hunter Elliott and head coach Mike Bianco had to say after the game.
During its first start in SEC:
“It was exciting to have my first start in the SEC. I just didn’t attack the zone early and followed a lot of hitters early. I didn’t have my best command today. I went out and I competed, and that’s all I had today.”
At installation after the first two rounds:
“I settled in. Got a better feel for my shift and was on cruise control for a little while. Made a mistake on a bunt and another mistake on a pickoff. Just some mental mistakes I can’t make.”

At the first departure on the road:
“It was fun. As a starting pitcher, you settle into the game, and it’s harder on the road. I feel like I did a good job. It wasn’t an environment too hostile, so it wasn’t a big deal to have it on the road.”
On Hunter Elliott’s performance:
“I don’t think he threw really well. He competed hard, which is what we knew he would do, but I don’t think that was his best thing. I think he fell behind in the count, and we didn’t help it. It was a bad day for us all around.
On home plate struggles after the first inning:
“After that it was just a good mix of fastball, slider, changeover and even a big curveball. We just couldn’t get any good shots from him. We were really uncomfortable for the rest of the day.”
