Kites with photos of politicians in demand in Jaipur ahead of Assembly elections

With elections in five states around the corner, politics is the flavor of the season ahead of the upcoming Makar Sankranti festival.

In Jaipur, kite enthusiasts ask for the address of Kapoor Abdul Gaffar Ansari, 74, better known as Ghafoor chacha. Ansari has been making kites for 40 years. His repertoire includes life-size kites with large cutouts from national and regional leaders.

“These kites with cutouts of political leaders are in great demand. Only time can tell who will win the election. People have been willing to pay up to Rs 1,000 for a kite although I am not very willing to sell these kites, “Abdul Ghaffar Ansari told India Today.

The kites that have attracted the most attention include those of party leader Samajwadi Akhilesh Yadav, Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Interior Minister Amit Shah , Chief Minister of Rajasthan and Congress veteran Ashok Gehlot, former Deputy Chief Minister. Sachin Pilot, former CM Vasundhara Raje, among others.

Several other cutouts include those of veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, cricketer Virat Kohli and actress Anushka Sharma.

“The message these kites convey is that of unity and brotherhood. I want people to live in peace and that is why I make these kites. I have been in this business for 40 years,” said Ansari.
