Island Farm’s Garden to Hearth Event Celebrates Season – The Coastland Times

On Tuesday, November 23 and Wednesday, November 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Island Farm will be holding its annual Garden to Hearth event to celebrate the fall season and Thanksgiving holiday.

Visitors will learn about the different ways that Roanoke Island families prepared for the winter months on Roanoke Island in the 1850s. “Join our interpreters as they cook on the fire pit, marinate the vegetables -roots, smoke the mule in the smokehouse, make candles and build simple vine wreaths, ”the event announcement said.

The making of candles and wreaths is included in the admission cost of $ 8 for persons 4 years of age and over; Children aged 0-3 can access the site for free.

Island Farm, located at the northern end of Roanoke Island, offers a journey through time to the mid-19e century External banks. The living history site offers daily programs that include tours with the site’s wild Corolla horses, live blacksmithing, farm tours, toys and games, weaving and other traditional crafts. Island Farm hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until November. The farm is located at 1140 N US Highway 64, north of Manteo, on Roanoke Island.
