About Historic St. Mary’s (HSMC)
Historic St. Mary’s City (HSMC) is an open-air museum of living history and archeology, dedicated to the study and interpretation of the lives of those who inhabited the area now known as St Mary’s City. This includes the ancestors of contemporary Native American groups, including the Piscataway Indian Nation and the Piscataway Conoy Tribe, who recognized the unique environmental benefits of the area and have lived here for thousands of years. It includes European settlers from all walks of life who made the courageous decision to travel to an unknown land and settle on the banks of what has been called the St. Mary’s River. This also includes people of African descent who were forced from their homes and transported across the Atlantic Ocean to work in perpetual slavery. The interactions of these groups of people gave rise to complex legacies of opportunity and oppression, the effects of which are still felt today.

HSMC is responsible for the preservation of over 800 acres of land and three miles of shoreline. The museum continues to make new archaeological discoveries and train future archaeologists with its annual Field School in Historical Archeology, the oldest field school in historical archeology in the country. HSMC continues to engage students and the general public in educational programs in innovative and exciting ways, encouraging people of all ages to relate the past to their contemporary lives.

About the St. Mary’s County NAACP branch
For more than a century, the National Association for the Advancement of People of Color has worked to ensure the political, educational, social and economic rights of all people and to eliminate discrimination based on race. Inspired by the strength and commitment of the 1909 Appeal, which denounced the growing oppression of people of color and mobilized thousands of people to work to end this discrimination, the NAACP seeks to establish a strategic direction as ‘she is embarking on the development of the New Call for the 21st Century.

In the fall of 2011, the NAACP launched a process to develop its strategic direction and plan, creating a powerful vision for the future and setting organizational goals that would focus its work for the 21st century. These six NAACP Game Changers address the main areas of inequality currently facing minorities: economic stability, education, health, public safety and criminal justice, voting rights and political representation, and strengthening youth engagement and young adults.

The charter of the St. Mary’s County branch was approved by the board of directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (National) on January 7, 1946. The St. Mary’s County branch developed a program which aligns with the specific issues here in St. Mary’s County.
