  • Best Palico Support Moves

Rise of the Monster Hunter reintroduced the ability to hire multiple buddies after World limited you to one Palico for the entire game. To keep Felynes distinct from the new Canyne buddies, Palicos come with a wide variety of support moves and will periodically use these moves during hunts to help the player.

GAME VIDEO OF THE DAY

Palicos are divided into different support types, but even within a small number of types there is plenty of variety to be found. However, not all moves are created equal – there are a few pitfalls to avoid. A well-equipped Palico tailored to your personal preferences and playstyle can be a tremendous asset on even the most dangerous hunts.

What are the types of Palico?

There are five types of Palico – Healer, Assist, Combat, Bomber, and Rally. The type determines the Palico’s support moves. Each Palico has a range of five support movements which will unlock as it levels up. Level 1 and Level 20 moves are the same for all Palicos of the same type.

For example, all Assist Palicos have Felyne Silkbind and Poison Purr-ison. Level 5, 10 and 15 support moves are Random. There is a slightly greater chance that the move in these slots will match the type of Palico – as in, the most common level 5 move found in Healer Palicos is Healing Bubble – but they will frequently have moves of other types as well .

To sum up, the first and last support moves are locked and type-exclusive, but the middle three are random. Support types and moves do not affect a Palico’s skills or stats. You cannot change a Palico’s type or skills after you engage it.

Healer

Level Support the move Effect
1 herbal healing Places a plant with restorative powers that continuously heals all nearby allies.
5 healing bubble Create bubbles that burst and heal when touched. Big bubbles heal better.
ten Vase of Vitality Places a vase that cures various status ailments. Stand in the smoke to receive its effects.
15 Furbid Acorn Heals a friend and temporarily prevents their health from being lost.
20 horn of health Significantly recovers Buddy and player health.

healer palicos are all about restoring health. herbal healing and Vase of Vitality act as the hunting aides Escuregot and Antidobra, respectively. healing bubble creates two bubbles, one small and one large, which will restore health when you burst them with an attack. Bubbles last for a certain amount of time and attacks from monsters or buddies will not cause them to burst.

horn of health will restore your health without having to interact with anything or stay in a certain area. Furbid Acorn is the least useful move. If a buddy loses all their health, they will simply leave the battle for a few moments until they regenerate. All other moves can heal buddies and hunters, so there’s no reason to use one that only helps the former.

If Palico healers suffer from anything, it’s overspecialization. As you get better at hunting and stockpile better healing items, a Palico with only healing moves is a bit of a stretch. They are still very good for new players, and even late game is good to have at least one Healer skill on a Palico of any type.

To help

Level Support the move Effect
1 Felyne Silk Link Fires movement-impairing iron silk at large monsters, using a Palico-sized ballista.
5 Come on, fight, win Reduces hunter stamina drain while your Palico is dancing.
ten Summeown Endemic Life Places a scented pouch that entices nearby endemic life to approach.
15 Shock Purr-ison Sets up a shock trap that prevents large monsters from moving.
20 Poison Purr Sets a trap that immobilizes large monsters and inflicts poison on them.

Assist Palicos have a variety of support moves that aren’t direct damage or healing. Come on, fight, win is very good for hunters who are often concerned about their stamina. The real prices are the two purring movements. Any monster walking into a Palico’s trap will be immobilized for as long as it would be by a hunter’s trap. You can’t capture monsters with Palico traps, but they’re great opportunities to breathe or just deal uninterrupted damage. Shock Purr-ison is available for Palicos of all types, and it’s definitely best support move for this slot.

Felyne Silk Link will restrict a monster’s movement, but it can still attack. Summeown Endemic Life spawns Endemic Life in the area, including a free Wirebug. That’s fine but there are much better options for the level 10 slot.

Struggle

Level Support the move Effect
1 rousing roar Unleashes a fearsome roar, empowering buddies and hunters.
5 Whirling Assault Spin around using their weapon to create a whirlwind then crash into monsters.
ten power drum Sounds a drum that increases the attack and defense of hunters and buddies.
15 The feat of the foot of the fleet Attract a monster’s attention, skillfully dodge its attack, then launch a counterattack.
20 Furr-ious Your Palico becomes furious. In this state, their attack power increases significantly.

Fight the palicos support their hunter with extra DPS. They are more aggressive than other types and often attract the attention of monsters. But when it comes to dealing damage, even Fight Palicos are upgraded by Palamutes in almost every way. Most self-buffing moves in the Fight Palico have an equivalent Palamute Gear scroll.

The real reason to choose a Fight Palico is their hunter moves. rousing roar will give you a considerable affinity boost that lasts a long time – over two minutes. Power Drum is also excellent. Although Rousing Roar is extremely good, picking a Fight Palico will also lock its level 20 move because Furr-iouswhich is not very helpful. Whirling Assault and The feat of the foot of the fleet are also unremarkable.

Bomber

Level Support the move Effect
1 Felyne Wyvernblast Fires Palico-sized Wyvernblast shells at monsters, setting off explosions when they hit.
5 Zap Blast Spinner Unleash a horde of spinning top-shaped bombs that hunt down monsters.
ten anti-monster mine Places a mine that explodes when triggered by a large monster, sometimes staggering it.
15 Bombay Lightning Place a bomb that flies through the air and emits a flash of light.
20 Giga Barrel Bombay Dash an enemy with a Giga Barrel Bomb.

Palico Bomber also focus on dealing damage. The main difference between them and Fight Palicos is that Bombers have a bit more utility. Their explosive attacks are also good for smash monster parts.

Felyne Wyvernblast, Zap Blast Spinnerand Giga Barrel Bombay are all good moves that deal good damage. anti-monster mine is a good attack that has the added utility of inducing a flinch. Bombay Lightning works similarly to throwing flash bomb fighters. This can be very useful if timed at the right time, but Palicos will miss their shot quite often. None of Palico Bomber’s moves are inherently bad, but neither are they great. Flash Bombay is a decent option on a Palico of a different type, but that’s about it.

Gathering

Level Support the move Effect
1 Endemic Life Dam Cast endemic life on monsters from a ballista. Results vary depending on the creatures thrown.
5 Mega boomerang Throws a gargantuan boomerang based on weapon attack type at enemies.
ten Camouflage Your Palico temporarily cloaks itself, preventing it from being targeted by monsters.
15 shock tripper Releases a lingering electrical field that inflicts lightning on monsters within.
20 pilfer A boomerang attack that steals materials from monsters.

Gathering of the palicos are very popular among late game hunters for a reason: pilfer. If your Palico hits with Pilfer, it take an extra material from the monster. You can view stolen items on the reward screen at the end of a hunt. Rare drops like plates and gems are included in the item pool for Pilfer, and a Palico will likely get 2-3 Pilfer hits in a single hunt.

The other exclusive rally movement, Endemic Life Dam, is unpredictable. When your Palico uses the move, it will fire a Blastoad, Poisontoad, Paratoad, or Sleeptoad at the monster. Sometimes they will forget to catch a toad and the move will fail. Toads your Palico shoots are not part of your Endemic Life inventory. It is completely random whether the move works or not. When it works it’s extremely effective for a level 1 move.

Mega boomerang, Camouflageand shock tripper aren’t particularly good compared to support moves of other types at these levels. In reality, Camouflage is to be avoided. One of the biggest functions of buddies is to draw aggro, so going invisible defeats the purpose.

Best Palico Support Moves

There are many good options for support moves in each slot. Much depends on your style of play and your needs. If you want the best all-around buddy, look for a Gathering Palico with the following moveset. This Palico will be able to buff the hunter, heal blights, hinder the monster, and steal additional materials.

  • Level 1: Endemic Life Dam
  • Level 5: Come on, fight, win
  • Level 10: Vase of Vitality
  • Level 15: Shock Purr-ison
  • Level 20: pilfer

While talking to Iori at Buddy Plaza, use the Scout option to select Gathering Palicos. After that, it’s pure luck if a Palico with a certain moveset will be available for rent.
