A historic house and garden in Donington-le-Heath linked to the Gunpowder Plot will reopen in March after its winter closure.

The 1620s House and Garden, near Coalville, will reopen for the 2022 season on Thursday March 31 and will be open Thursday to Sunday and public holidays, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., until the end of October.

The Leicestershire County Council-run attraction will also host a program of events through December, including talks, workshops, living history, outdoor theatre, plant fairs and more.

County Councilor Christine Radford said: “The 1620s house is a gem and we are delighted to be able to welcome visitors again for the 2022 season.

“The house and its gardens help bring history to life in an educational and engaging way, and I encourage people of all ages to visit.”

There is also the possibility of playing the escape game Sorcery and Superstitions, included in the price and played in person, on the site or online.

The 1620s House and Garden is a rare example of a family home built in the 13th century and modernized in 1618.

It is set in 17th century style gardens, an orchard, herb gardens and a labyrinth, with a tea room open from 11am to 4pm, where you can enjoy homemade soups and cakes.

The house has been home to many families over its 700 year history, but the most famous is the Digby family, including gunpowder plotter Sir Everard Digby.

The family has lived in the house for over 200 years.

Tickets can be purchased at the box office on site on regular opening days.
